Colonel Carolyn F. Kleiner was assigned as the Director of Strategic Studies and Research, Reserve Components and the Senior U.S. Army Reserve Adviser to the Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College in October 2009. COL Kleiner has served continuously in the U.S. Army in the active or reserve component, since 1975. Following six years on active duty as an enlisted Flight Operations Coordinator and three years in the Individual Ready Reserve, COL Kleiner was commissioned in Military Intelligence on 13 July 1985. Over the next thirteen years, her assignments included Intelligence Officer with the Army National Guard 50th Armored Division, Somerset, New Jersey; the Defense Language Institute, Monterey, California; the U.S. Defense Attaché Office, Bonn, Germany; the Electronic Proving Ground, Fort Huachuca, Arizona; Manpower Officer, Arizona Army National Guard; and Watch Officer with the Joint Intelligence Center, Atlantic Command, Norfolk, Virginia. From 1996 to 1998, she served as the Deputy Director for Intelligence for the Joint Preparation for Onward Movement Center, Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1998, COL Kleiner entered the Active Guard and Reserve Program and has served as a Training and Mobilization Officer on a Command Assistance and Assessment Team, New Haven, CT; the Executive and Operations Officer of the Western Army Reserve Intelligence Support Center, Parks RFTA, CA; and as Chief, Office of Reserve Management, Joint Intelligence Center-Pacific, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. From 2005-2007, she commanded the Northeast Army Reserve Intelligence Support Center at Fort Dix, NJ, and then attended the United States Army War College resident course. Her most recent assignment was Deputy Commander, Combat Support Agency Support Command, Military Intelligence Readiness Command, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. COL Kleiner is a graduate of the Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advance Courses, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, and the United States Army War College. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Christopher Newport University, Newport News, Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. COL Kleiner’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal with one bronze service star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with silver hourglass and M device, NCO Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 2, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, and the Military Intelligence Corps Knowlton Award.
