DAVID COGHLAN is a colonel in the Australian Regular Army. A 1984 graduate of the Royal Military College Duntroon, as a junior officer Colonel Coghlan specialized in Ground Based Air Defense followed by a number of operations and planning related appointments, including command at the Regimental level. His operational experience includes deployments to East Timor and Afghanistan. Colonel Coghlan has a Masters of Defence Studies from the University of New South Wales and is a member of the U.S. Army War College Class of 2008.

For a number of reasons, many of which are self-induced, the United States is in danger of losing, or may have already lost, the strategic initiative in Korea to the People's Republic of China. Given time, the ramifications of ceding the initiative to China may result in a unified Korea tilted toward Beijing.
