ALEX ROLAND is Professor of History at Duke University and Visiting Fellow at the Dibner Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he is completing a history of the Strategic Computing Initiative. A 1966 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Professor Roland served in Vietnam with he Third Marine Division before taking a Ph.D. in military history at Duke University. He is best known for his book, Underwater Warfare in the Age of Sail.

Indirectly, any military institute operates within its technology context. The Army of today is, for instance, in a period of technological transition from an Industrial Age army to an Information Age army. A tremendous faith in technology is an abiding American characteristic.
